Chen, S. H. (2007). The effects of tones on speaking frequency and intensity ranges in Mandarin and Min dialects. Journal of Acoustic Society of America, 117 (5), 3225-3230.
Presentation: Angela
Summary: Chris
This study investigated the linguistic differences in terms of speaking frequency and intensity for two tonal languages—Mandarin and Southern Min. The study had two specific aims. First, the F0 and intensity between Mandarin and Min were compared. Secondly, the F0 of the two languages were compared to that of American English. Subjects from the Mandarin group and the Min group were asked to read materials in their native language. The highest F0, the lowest F0, the maximum range of F0, and the intensity were examined between the two languages. Results showed that no significant difference was found between the F0 of the two tonal languages (Mandarin and Min). However, Min speakers showed a greater maximum range of speaking intensity and a smaller lowest speaking intensity. The reason may be due to the influence of tonal effects of Min dialects. Furthermore, compared to American English speakers, Mandarin and Min speakers had larger maximum range of F0 and greater maximum range of intensity.
