Khouw, E. & Ciocca, V. (2007). Perceptual correlates of Cantonese tones. Journal of Phonetics, 35, 104–117

Presentation: Chris
Summary: Sally

As acoustical and perceptual correlates of Cantonese lexical tones, F0 level and average F0 of the vocalic segment were measured through eight consecutive sections in this study. 10 speakers read 4 sets of 6 CV-structured Cantonese words contrasted in the six lexical tones in the language. 10 expert listeners and 20 native Cantonese speakers were then asked to identify these words. Results showed that for both production and perception experiments, direction and magnitude of F0 change in the later part of the segment were essential correlates for tone identification. For perception results in particular, no significant difference was found among the recruited expert and laymen native listeners. F0 change helped all listeners to differentiate contour tones from levels tones, and among the three contour tones as well.
