Xu, Yi. (1998). Consistency of tone-syllable alignment across different syllable structures and speaking rates. Phonetica, 55, 179-203.
Presentation: Angela
Summary: Chris
This paper investigated the tone-syllable alignment in simple CV and CVN structures. The influences of different speaking rates on tonal alignments were also discussed. Results of Experiment 1 showed that the internal syllable structure, whether containing a final nasal or not, did not have a direct effect on the alignment of tonal contours in the host syllable. Experiment 2 showed that the F0 peak of the rising tone always occurred near the offset of the syllable while the onset of F0 rising always appeared near the center of the syllable regardless of syllable duration and speech rate. It was found that the F0 contour of R tone did not spread out evenly through the whole syllable. As syllable duration increased, the tonal contour moved more directly and increasingly with the latter half of the syllable. The implication of the study was that the syllable was the reference domain of tone implementation in Mandarin. The rising contour tone was implemented as a sequence of integral dynamic targets instead of static targets.
