Ladefoged, P. and Wu, Z. (1984). Places of articulation: an investigation of Pekingese fricatives and affricates. Journal of Phonetics, 12, 267-278.

Summary: Angela
This paper discussed whether the notion ‘places of articulation’ was a suitable criterion for categorizing consonants. The authors used articulatory data of Pekingese fricatives and affricates as examples, and demonstrated that a sound perceived to be the same could actually be pronounced differently in different languages. The current categorization of consonants would lead to the loss of detailed phonetic features. Therefore, since languages differed in the exact positions where sounds were made, it was suggested that ‘place of articulation’ should not be considered as discrete categories.
